Artwork by Michael Wales
About The Art
I'm Michael Wales, an artist based in Edison, NJ. My primary medium is charcoal and ink on oriented strand board (OSB). OSB is a construction material created by compressing thousands of individual wood flakes into a board using adhesive. My process is similar to that of a sculptor's. I start with a clean slate of OSB, removing excess wood strands with black ink. Then, I begin to work with charcoal, creating shadows and revealing an underlying image among the remaining wood strands. The unique and chaotic texture of OSB dictates the result of each piece.
